Generally speaking if you go up one tooth on your front sprocket it is equivalent to going down about 2.5 to 3 teeth on your rear sprocket. This will increase top end and top speed but will reduce bottom end power or your ability to get out of the hole. If you drop a tooth on your front sprocket the reverse is true and you gain bottom end while losing top end speed. Countershaft sprockets are a very easy way to change gearing with minimal expense and effort.
